About BCO Sunday League
BCO Sunday League is a coed program for kids grade 2-12 where they get the opportunity to play on team without having to go through the stress of tryouts. Each Sunday is a 90 minute session with a skill development portion as well as a game play portion. A normal volleyball team will take anywhere from 12-14 players, in our Sunday League we keep the teams from 8-10 players. Its important that we have enough players on each team so that if some team mates are missing we can still put 6 on the court for the matches. We try to balance not having too many players sitting off with making sure each team has enough players to play real games. We also rebalance teams on a weekly basis. For example if one team has 5 players show up and another team has 10, we offer players on the team of 10 a chance to move just for the day in order to get them more game time.
JR Division (Grade 5 and Under)
In our Junior division we have 50-60 minutes of skill development followed by 15-20 minutes of modified games (such as spike ball) and then another 15 minutes of 6 v 6 "triple ball". Triple Ball has a serve go into the court, then a “free ball” toss to each side. The free ball is a very easy ball tossed right to a player so that a rally can ensue. Each ball is worth one point. In our Jr division we use “volley lite” balls. These balls are made specially for younger ages and are lighter in weight so the kids have an easier time controlling the ball and serving it over the net. We also include a spike ball component into each day. Spike ball is a 2v2 game on 1/3 of the court. This way each court still has 12 players on it, but there are 3 different games going on, which means far more ball touches for each child. The game is played over a low net to give the kids the opportunity to spike the ball. Spike ball is always followed by normal 6 on 6 game of Triple ball.
INT Division (Grade 6-8)
In our INT and SR division we believe in the importance of getting kids ready for their school team, and club team tryouts. Intermediates will do 45 minutes of skill development followed by 45 minutes of game play where each team will play 2 matches. We believe it is important to learn the skills of the game, but also get the opportunity to put them into game play situations. In our INT division our game play is modified and we play “triple ball”, which is the version of volleyball that school and club teams play at that age and is recommended by Volleyball Canada. Triple Ball has a serve go into the court, then a “free ball” toss to each side. The free ball is a very easy ball tossed right to a player so that a rally can ensue. Each ball is worth one point.
SR Division (Grade 8-12)
Our SR division will do 40 minutes of skill development followed by 50 minutes of game play where each team will play 2 matches. In our SR division we play “double ball”. This is a version of volleyball where on an ace or a missed serve a “free ball” is tossed in. This give the opportunity for each ball to start with a rally. Every ball is worth one point. For example if your team serves an ace they will also get a free ball, and with it an opportunity to earn a second point. On a missed serve them team receiving would get the free ball.
High Performance Program (12U-14U & 15U-18U)
Since launching our Sunday Leagues, we have received lots of interest. Due to demand we’ve decided to break out our club-level athletes into their own HP program. Starting October, 20th we’ll offer 9 consecutive Sundays of HP Programming alongside our regular Sunday League. We’re very pleased to announce that these sessions will be run by our new 16U girls’ coach, Maverick Hatch. The goal with this HP program is to ensure club level athletes receive the technical feedback with a more competitive, game-like approach to skill development. Please note, athletes are required to have at least 1 year of club volleyball experience.
