2021 Club Coaches

BCO is proud to present our star-studded line up of coaches for the 2021 Club Season!

13U Girls Head Coach- Rob Hill

Picture
Rob grew up on the North Shore where he enjoyed playing several sports before focusing on volleyball at UBC. Lacking the height, athleticism and skill level possessed by most varsity volleyball players, the rationale behind his selection to the varsity team in 1986 remains a complete mystery. Nevertheless, Rob found success on the court as a shagger of volleyballs during training sessions - which he did with remarkable vigor and determination for most of his first two seasons at UBC.  Repeated suggestions from the coaching staff and several teammates to drop volleyball “for the good of the game” went unheeded. Eventually, in his third season Rob found himself a regular starting left side attacker. As a starter for the ‘Birds for his final three seasons, it remained clear that he had limited talent and was unsure of most of the rules of the game.

While the above is a generally accurate description of Rob’s experience as a player at UBC, he was also a 3-time Canada West All-Star, an All-Canadian and team captain for his final two years. He was invited to stay on with the Men’s program as a member of the coaching staff planning and running practices which he gladly did for five years. Rob has served on the Volleyball BC Board of Directors since 2014.

Rob returned to the North Shore in 2005 where he and his wife Annie are raising their three kids.

13U Girls Asst Coach - Karen Kirkwood

Picture
Karen is a proud BCO alumni and, after completing a successful high school multi-sport
education at Sentinel Secondary which culminated with a Provincial Volleyball Championship and All-Star Team recognition, she played on the SFU varsity team while completing an Applied Science degree in Kinesiology.

After being benched by law school, lawyering, and child rearing responsibilities, Karen returned to the “game” and over the past 15 years has had the privilege of coaching 40 (and counting) school and club soccer, basketball, ultimate and volleyball teams for athletes aged 5 – 17. She is currently coaching the Sentinel Senior Boys and Bantam Girls Volleyball programs. She is very excited to share her experience and love of volleyball with BCO’s young athletes.

13U Girls Asst Coach - Charlotte Hill
